Why the Nazis come to power?

During the German Wiemar Republic election of 1932, Hitler failed to receive the majority of votes for presidency. However, the Nazi party had 230 members on the German council, this was the biggest group at that time. However in 1933, Hitler was appointed to chancellor of Germany by Paul Von Hindenburg. After the infamous Reichstag fire allowed Hitler to convince Germany action needed to be taken to prevent communist subversion. The origins of the fire have never been discovered, with people believing it was a conspiracy by the Nazis. In the aftermath of the fire Hitler managed to convince the Reichstag to grant him emergency powers, this allowed him to create laws without the consent of the Reichstag. This was passed 441 to 84, a huge majority. Hitler used these powers destroy German democracy. When Hindenburg died, Hitler officially became dictator.

Why did Hitler give up?

It wasn't so much as giving into Hitler, but you have to understand the situation the country of Germany was in at the time Hitler came to power. Germany had just came off an embarrasing defeat in WW1 to the allies, and to make things worse the Treaty of Versailles made Germany soley responsible for WW1. The German economy was in a bad way partly due to the reparations the Treaty of Versailles made them pay to the victors. So when Hitler came along people believed in him and what he was saying. The Weimar Republic that was established after the German keiser abdicated his throne was ineffective. Hitler promised stability, jobs, and most of all he gave the Germans a scapegoat, one they could blame all their problems on...the Jews. Hitler protrayed himself as a messianic person. He truly believed that he, and only he would bring Germany out of the embarrasment and shame of WW1. The people of Germany had nothing else to look to and Hitler to the German people seemed like a God send.

Why did people want to believe Hitler?

Hitler saved Germany from financial ruin after WWI. After 20 years of this, people were so used to it that they believed him. "If you tell a big lie often enough, everyone will believe you."
