In 1960, Sir Edmund Hillary mounted an expedition to collect and analyze physical evidence of the Yeti. He sent back a 'Yeti scalp' which was at the Khumjung monastery, which turned out to be the made from the skin of a Serow, a goat like Himalayan antelope.
It is unknown exactly how many people made unofficial attempts to climb Mt Everest. On 8 June 1924, UK climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine made an attempt to reach the summit from which they never returned. In subsequent years, many more attempts were made to summit Mt Everest, but it was Edmund Hillary who succeeded in 1953.
