the battle of Britain
D-Day
The Battle of Ortona
Battle of the Atlantic
i belive those are some of them
You IDIOT! None of those were actually in Germany! The battle of Britain was in London, D-Day was in France. Jeez, you'd think you'd atleast know that if you were going to answer
true ...there were no major battles in Germany because by the time the allies got there the Germans were retreating to Berlin..the only one i can think of is the battle for Berlin
Important battles are numerous - a few highlights.
Europe and Africa ----------- German advances in the Ardennes May 1940, cutting off British and French army, leading directly to fall of France.
Battle of Britain - fought off and on summer and fall of 1940 for control of the skies over England. While a German invasion was far fetched, German control of the skies might have allowed bombing and attacks on merchant shipping sufficient to force Britain out of the war.
Smolensk - Major eastern front battle in July 1941 that essentially eliminated Russian ability to resist in the central Moscow center. German forces did not adequately follow up on their victory.
Kiev - Side battle that Germany won by capturing this important city plus large Soviet forces, August 1941. Led to German occupation of Ukraine for bulk of war.
Moscow - Fought 1941 October to December. Probably most decisive battle of the war. Germany wins, they control the eastern front. Russia wins, they dominate the central front indefinitely. Russia won.
Stalingrad - Long drawn out battle from summer 1942 to Feb 1943. Ends with destruction of German 6th army, one of their best.
North Africa - Montgomery's British army defeats smaller German force in Egypt. Led to collapse of Axis power in N Africa.
Kursk - Indecisive in itself, despite massive casualties on both sides, but left Germany unable to maintain initiative on eastern front. Largest tank battle in world history. Summer 1943.
Normandy - June 1944. Western allies successfully re-enter the mainland of Western Europe.
Berlin - April/May 1945 - Anticlimatic victory of Russian forces over decimated German army. Important in that the Russian victory enabled the Russians to establish an empire over all eastern Europe for 50 years.
Other 'battles' would be the various Atlantic Ocean conflicts, the air war over Germany, etc. These type affairs were so drawn out, often over years, that I do not consider them battles in the true sense.
Asia --------------
Pearl Harbor - Dec 1941. Brought the USA into the world conflict.
Singapore - Early 1942. Japanese victory ends chance of European powers influencing events in far east.
Midway - Most important single naval battle of the war. Puts Japan on defensive. Jump starts USA counterattack ability. June 1942.
Okinawa - Bloody and drawn out 1945 battle between large Japanese army forces and USA army forces. Important in that it opened Japanese homeland to massive aerial bombardment. Showed that even Japanese civilians were fanatical in resistance. Probably influenced Pres. Truman to use the A bomb a few months later rather than proceed with traditional invasion of Japan.
Lots of other conflicts/battles in Asia such as the entire Chinese/Japanese war, the Philippines, Guadalcanal/Solomons, Iwo Jima. None of those were as decisive turning point battles as the ones mentioned above.
and the control of Italy, with out that the Italians would have still been fighting in the war
