Spain retained several possessions in the Pacific following the Spanish-American War, notably Guam and the Philippines. Although the Treaty of Paris in 1898 ceded these territories to the United States, Spain maintained control over certain smaller islands, including Wake Island and the Marianas, until the early 20th century. Additionally, Spain held onto some of its Pacific territories until they were later ceded or sold in subsequent years. The legacy of Spanish colonial rule in the region can still be seen in cultural and historical influences.
