Racial segregation and inequality provoked the massive protest at Kent State University. This was concerning black students who felt mistreated. They wanted to advance their human rights, and therefore their own causes.

In general many of the protestors during the Vietnam Era were college students and other young people. Perhaps the most significant protest took place at Kent State University where National Guard troops opened fire and killed four college students. Protest of the Vietnam War was popularized and made an icon by various musicians such as Creedence Clearwater Revival's anthem "Fortunate Son". Much discontent was created by the fact that many wealthier Americans were not drafted into service and avoided the war by going to college or even moving to Canada.
In 1970, 4 students were shot and killed by the National Guard at Kent State University in Ohio, during an anti-war protest. Students had been throwing rocks at the soldiers, who felt that they had to defend themselves. In retrospect, it appeared to have been an error for the governor to have called out the guard in the first place. It remains one of the most tragic events of that period.
The policy of massive retaliation and the approach to war known as "brinkmanship" were associated with U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles during the Eisenhower administration in the 1950s. Massive retaliation aimed to deter Soviet aggression by threatening overwhelming nuclear response, while brinkmanship involved pushing dangerous confrontations to the edge of conflict to achieve favorable outcomes. This strategy sought to leverage the threat of nuclear war to maintain peace and stability during the Cold War.
After the revolution of October 1917, Russia withdrew from the war, as it suffered massive casualties, and Vladimir Illyich Lenin became the first head of state of the USSR. On a side note after the revolution there was still strife in Russia between the communists (red army) and the Imperial Loyalists (white army).
