In general many of the protestors during the Vietnam Era were college students and other young people. Perhaps the most significant protest took place at Kent State University where National Guard troops opened fire and killed four college students. Protest of the Vietnam War was popularized and made an icon by various musicians such as Creedence Clearwater Revival's anthem "Fortunate Son". Much discontent was created by the fact that many wealthier Americans were not drafted into service and avoided the war by going to college or even moving to Canada.
