What did the us navy do to help win ww1?

If the truth be told, not much. WWI was almost completely a land war. There was one major naval battle, which took place in 1916, before the US got into the war. The US Navy escorted convoys of ships carrying troops and supplies to Europe, and guarded against submarines, and tried to hunt submarines, which was not too easy in those days. A US battleship squadron of four or five battleships operated with the British Grand Fleet from its anchorage in the Orkney Islands, Scapa Flow, but since the German High Seas Fleet would not come out to fight, it saw no action.

What did Scotland do during World War 2?

According to the 1921 census of Scotland the total WW1 deaths = 74,000. In the period now under consideration, 1911 to 1921, an additional adjustment of 74,000 was made in respect of war deaths among Scottish soldiers and sailors outwith Scotland. http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/text/chap_page.jsp?t_id=SRC_P&c_id=3&cpub_id=S1921PRE&show=DB

Was there aircraft carriers in World War 1?

Aircraft carriers existed in WW1, but only Great Britain and Japan had them, in very small numbers, and they were not used. HMS Furious could have participated in the Battle of Jutland but was held out of the battle deliberately.INCORRECT: In May 1916, no aircraft carriers existed in the Royal Navy. Two SEAPLANE carriers were designated to accompany the Grand fleet and the Battle cruiser fleet at the Battle of Jutland, but CAMPANIA somehow missed the signal to sail with the Grand fleet (she was anchored in an obscure bay), and was therefore left behind in Scapa Flow. The other Seaplane carrier, ENGADINE, did accompany the BC fleet, and launched a plane to recconoiter the enemy, but although the plane was able to report back to her carrier, Engadine was unable to pass the messages on to Beatty, the Admiral of the Battlecruiser force.Furious was not launched until August 1916, completed in June 1917, and flew off her first aircraft in August 1917. HMS Argus was not launched until December 1917. She didn't land her fisrt aircraft until the 1st October, 1918.Seaplane carriers, by difference, have to stop in the sea, lower the plane on to the sea by crane, and then the plane take off from the sea. Having landed (back on the water) the plane would taxi to its mother ship where it would be craned back on board.

Why did the Allies wait until 1944 to invade France?

You just don't grasp the logistics involved - Planning, training troops and mounting an invasion of that scale was an incredibly collossal task. The Allies first had to train enough soldiers to land on the beaches and defeat about 350,000 heavily dug in, experienced German troops. - They had to follow this up with immediate armour support as the Germans had 4 Panzer Divisions in the area (potentially about 1,200 tanks) - So apart from troop landing ships, the Allies had to have Tank Landing Ships and their follow up support. - In those days it took about 10 trucks of fuel, spares and ammunition to support a single tank in action! They landed about 175,000 troops and 320 tanks the FIRST day - can you imagine supplying food for all those soldiers every day. -To say nothing about ammunition and spare weapons. Follow up supplies arrived in increasing numbers every day for over a month. Apart from all this the Allies had to have air support in the form of fighters to kill German fighters, rocket carrying Typhoons and Thunderbolts to kill German tanks and bombers to hit German troop formations. The Allied air forces flew over 14,000 sorties on D-Day alone. The landing ships had to have Naval cover and Battleships to give supporting gunfire. The fleet when ready was over 11,000 ships in total. - Can you begin to imagine where on the English coast to moor and load that many ships ? There were 7 big Battleships, and over 80 cruisers and destroyers, some coming all the way from Scapa around Ireland the weeks before invasion. The whole affair was an absolute marvel of planning, timing, ingenuity and finally bravery to carry out and succeed as it did. - And you owe your freedom today to those men -
