The Churchill Barriers .
A British home base for their Atlantic fleet,I believe the ships used in the destruction of the Bismark came from here.
During World War II, the British Home Fleet primarily assembled at Scapa Flow, a large natural harbor located in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. This strategic location provided a secure base for the Royal Navy, allowing it to protect the northern approaches and support operations in the North Atlantic. Scapa Flow was crucial for coordinating naval efforts against German forces and ensuring the safety of Allied shipping routes.
Austrians and Germans sank their own ships during World War I and World War II to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. This tactic, known as scuttling, was employed to deny strategic assets to opponents and to destroy valuable resources. The most notable instance was the scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow in 1919, where German sailors deliberately sunk their ships to avoid surrendering them to the Allies. This act was seen as a way to maintain a semblance of honor and control over their naval assets despite defeat.
If the truth be told, not much. WWI was almost completely a land war. There was one major naval battle, which took place in 1916, before the US got into the war. The US Navy escorted convoys of ships carrying troops and supplies to Europe, and guarded against submarines, and tried to hunt submarines, which was not too easy in those days. A US battleship squadron of four or five battleships operated with the British Grand Fleet from its anchorage in the Orkney Islands, Scapa Flow, but since the German High Seas Fleet would not come out to fight, it saw no action.
According to the 1921 census of Scotland the total WW1 deaths = 74,000. In the period now under consideration, 1911 to 1921, an additional adjustment of 74,000 was made in respect of war deaths among Scottish soldiers and sailors outwith Scotland. http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/text/chap_page.jsp?t_id=SRC_P&c_id=3&cpub_id=S1921PRE&show=DB
