Many thanks to the contribution from the previous writer. The advances in technology were seen in the innovative revolving turret canon of Monitor type Union warships. Better rifles were developed and the forerunner of modern day machine gun was developed by Henry Gatling and his Gatling gun. Yes, the telegraph had been already invented but it became a vital tool in communications for the South and the North.
Railroads did not change much but, and its a big but, for the first time railroads were key to moving troops for each side. The South used their smaller railroad system better than the North in the early part of the war.
For the first time trench warfare and better defensive fortifications also came into play in the US Civil War. In line with this was the better performing rifles that had a longer range than ever before. Thus charges against the trenches manned with these longer range rifles, made headlong attacks disasters for both sides.
ANS 4 Nobody seems to remember those fore-runners of the modern submarine . - For the first time in history men fought underwater.
1. Armored warships, termed "Iron Clads" were used for the first time against each other. But they had been invented before the US Civil War, by other countries. 2. The Gatling gun (manually operated machinegun-hand cranked) was invented in the US by Mr. Gatling, and is rumored to have been used during the war; however it wasn't purchased by the US Army until after the war. 3. Balloons were used by both sides (North & South); but balloons had been used for artillery spotting during the Napoleonic wars. 4. CSC Hunley was the first successful submarine sinking of an enemy (US) warship; but the American Turtle, piloted by the Continental Army's Sergeant Lee, was the first use of a submarine in combat, during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). 5. The US Spencer .52 caliber seven shot repeating rifle, and the US Henry .44 caliber 15 shot repeating rifles were first used in the US Civil War. Especially the Henry, is often termed the "assault rifle" of the Civil War.

There was also major changes to Command and control. The smallest unit of men at the begining of the war was a company of 100 men.
