Britain has had a long standing (centuries old) policy of preventing any one continental power from controlling the low countries (Netherlands, Belgium). Thus Britain became involved in WWI and WWII, fearing German domination of that area. Note that Britain fought France for 15 years around 1800 over the same issue. They had earlier fought the Spanish/Hapsburgs over this matter.

Britain has always had a fear that domination of this area by a major power would lead to making Britain economically inferior, reduce trade, and present a possible military invasion route to England.

Otherwise, in WWII, Churchill generally hated Germans and wished to see their national power destroyed, regardless of cost. Thus he rather willingly spent the British colonial empire and much of Britains wealth to wreck Germany.

The result of course was a total collapse of Britains world influence, the rise of the USA as a replacement power and the occupation of half of Europe by Soviet armies.

But, at least nobody controls Brussels but Belgians!

- The Brits allocated us the role Defender Basicly since there was know one stronger than Britain at the time or even able to match us we were the rulers of the seas even if you put the 2nd and 3rd largest fleets together France and Russia you still were no were near the size of the British fleet Britains aim in WW2 was to defeat Hitler what ever the cost and keep the world safe ( " keep the world safe" may seem really biased but its true an American General said " shold the Great Empire fall then so too would the world" the Great Empire is the British Empire and evn though were the 4th or 5th strongest nation now we still hold the most influance over the world due to the respect the countries give us and the Debt the feel they owe.
