I'm not an expert but some of the reasons surely would have been that he wanted power. But you cant simply just ask for power and get it. He started the rumor (which is basically what it was) that the Jews were trying to take over Germany and that they should be eliminated. Because he already had high power in the German court he could quite easily convince people what he was saying is true.
