According to the Paris Peace Accords, the U.S. and their allied troops withdrew from South Vietnam by the end of April, 1973, leaving South Vietnam, and allowing them to decide for themselves the future status of their country.

Within two years (April, 1975), North Vietnam forces occupied the south - including the Presidential Palace in SaiGon, where South Vietnam's Premier surrendered to the north.
