It will probably always be used as text book example in the World's Military Academy's as how not to conduct an Amphibious Operation. It was planned as a way to break the Germans defense of Italy by landing behind the Gustav Line and capturing the Forces holding up the advance from Naples to Rome. It failed for a variety of reasons: the landing force did not have air superiority, it attacked with only two divisions against a known defense of six divisions, it was counting on the Germans abandoning the Gustav Line when attacked from the rear and it was plauged by interservice bickering. The invasion achieved surprise, capturing hundreds of sleeping sentries and putting the 36,034 member landing force, 3,069 vehicles onto the beach with only 13 killed, 44 missing and 97 wounded. And that was where they sat for the next four months, receiving fire from everywhere including daily bombings. They never trapped anyone, killed very few of their enemies and came very close to being wiped out.

The Battle of Anzio was begun in January 22, 1944. It was intended to be a fast paced attack toward Rome that would put the Germans in an awkward position where they were in trouble no matter what they did. Instead, there was no a rapid breakout and the invading forces were trapped on the beach and surrounded. They fought there under terrible conditions for 4 months before breaking out.
