Despite the fact that the British were not invaded in WW2 the efforts & privations of the population were very great. Life was disrupted: Sure the occupied countries suffered far more, be they in Europe or the Far East, but the disruption was no less great for not having the gestapo on the street. Industry & agriculture was affected and most of the men were in war service, which meant women were involved in both industry & agriculture in their places. My eldest brother did not,as an example, see his father until he was 3 years old. There was rationing of course, which continued in Britain well into the 1950s for some things ! Britain did not prosper either during the war years or after it, the British put a lot into the war & got precious little from it. But the British were free, & maybe that says it all: the British got nothing from WW2 but we remained free.
There were no DIRECT effects on civilians during the Battle of Midway, because that battle took place in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
British civilians carried boxes that contained gas masks that were designed to protect them from possible chemical attacks by the Germans. The Germans had the capability to use chemical weapons, but did not against the British.
