1- after ww-1 European powers made a land grab for overseas colonies. Japan an allied at the time, did not.

2- before ww-2 started, Japan decided to carve out an empire (in China) in much the same manner as western europeans did after ww-1. Japan was the late-comer.

3- after a brutal invasion of N. China and China, the US placed sanctions and embargoes of oil and steel on Japan. Japan, being a naval power NEEDED both resources, land expansion in China, and glory for the Empire. They were painted into a corner, and felt the ONLY way out of it was to strike!

4- Unable to comply with the sanctions, Japan figured to knock off the US and British fleets in the far east and take over the oil and rubber producing areas in the far east.

5- They hoped if a buffer of fortress islands could be created, they would be able to hold out forever, gain the much needed resources from their "new colonies", and grab a HUGE CHUNK of land from China.

Japanese expansionist ideas which motivated them to invade China and Manchuria and side with Germany on the basis that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Attempts to get Japan to moderate its demands led to the US enforcing an oil embargo and this set a time-table for action.

The defeat of the Japanese by the Russians on the Manchurian border engendered a fear that allowed the Russians to devote more effort to resisting Germany from mid-1941 while simultaneously causing the Japanese to move their endeavors in a Southerly direction.

Japan, having learned the value of an empire, decided to colonize the Western Pacific. This would provide them with oil and other resources without opposition from the European colonial powers (British, French, Dutch). But they first expanded their power base and eliminated nearby threats by taking over much of Korea, Manchuria, and China. The Dutch East Indies (Indonesia and Malaysia) and the islands of Oceania were all lightly defended by their overextended home countries. World War II became a part of the global conflict that favored the military power of Japan. However, they could not withstand the eventual entry of the US into the war, ironically provoking it prematurely at Pearl Harbor.

The expansionist military ideas of Japan, supported by the Japanese Emperor, led Japan to first invade China with hardly a protest from the world. Japan had dropped out of the League of Nations. Japan not only sought the mineral wealth of China and Manchuria, it sought the oil in the East Indies. This was going to eventually run into colonies of Great Britain. They Japanese concern that war needed to be waged by Japan against the USA was a fraudulent idea. The bone of contention, however, was the occupation of the Philippines by the USA. This was a problem, no doubt. There seemed to be no diplomatic solution for Japan to carry on its military operations with the real problem of the Philippines. Looking back, however, since Japan had really begun WW 2 with the invasion of China, the USA did not intervene. Two other factors were involved with Japan's bad decision. One was the neutrality agreement with Stalin. This was an agreement that there would be no conflict between them.

The major error was the attack on Pearl Harbor. Japan had Hitler's word that he would declare war on the USA over a Japan-USA conflict in the Pacific. This was a bad bet as Hitler could have not declared war on the USA. There is no honor among thieves as its said, so Hitler could have avoided USA intervention in Europe by letting the Japanese handle their own warlike affairs. Thinking he was invincible, Hitler made the error of bring the USA to Europe and North Africa.
