3rd March 1918 was the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk that ended the war between the Central Powers and the new Bolshevik Russian state, greatly in the Central Powers' favour. The reason for this was the war was seen as as the business of the bourgeois class and antithetical to the internationalist communist ideal ("workers of the world unite"). Lenin, who had been in power since the October Revolution the previous year (7th November 1917 according to the new calender adopted shortly after the revolution), didn't mind giving up huge tracts of Russian territory in the treaty as he still believed that the proletariat of Germany (and the rest of the world) would soon follow Russia's example, leading to an international workers' state (and thus the newly-drawn borders would be meaningless). History would prove him wrong.
