The actual physical impact was minimal. Very little damage was done to Japan by the raid.

The main impact was psychological- Japan had had a long string of successes and seemed invincible. The surprise bombing of the Japanese homeland showed everyone that they could be harmed, and it was a moral victory for the United States.

It also led the Japanese to launch an attack on the US Navy less than two months later at Midway, in an attempt to destroy the American aircraft carriers. American spies were able to discover the attack was coming, and the US Navy set up an ambush which nearly destroyed the Japanese fleet. The Japanese Navy never fully recovered from the devastation they suffered at Midway.
