On 5 June 1947, Secretary of State George C. Marshall proposed a program to President Truman that would help Europe recover from the economic effects of World War II. This became known as the Marshall Plan. The US would invest money in the economic reconstruction of Europe. Not only would aid be available to our Allies during the war, but defeated Germany, which had been divided into four zones, would also be eligible for aid. The Marshall Plan became one of the most effective economic aid programs in history. A total of 16 nations saw their economies improve as a result of the plan. Not only did Western Europe recover, but the US did not have to invest as much as originally planned.
