The attempt to blockade Southern ports and cause the Confederacy great economic harm was based on the once discarded Winfield Scott plan called the Anaconda Plan. The idea was sound enough, however, there were logistical problems involved with a really effective blockade. There were simply too many ports of entry, night time privateers escaped scrutiny and there was not enough Union warships to handle the project. It is also important to remember that ship to ship communications in 1861 were primitive. And, ship to shore communications also lacked the technology to communicate. Also, the threat of Confederate river and sea mines caused any number of problems.

Was there a declaration of war Civil War?

Short answer: No, can't declare war on yourself. Long answer: The whole purpose of the Civil War was for a new nation to be created, the Confederate States of America. If Lincoln had declared war on the CSA, then he would be recognizing that new nation...in effect the CSA just got what they wanted...a new nation (because President Lincoln just declared war on the Confederate States of America...therefore THEY EXIST AFTERALL!)

According to Lincoln what was his purpose in coming to Gettysburg?

In 1863, President Lincoln's visit to the town of Gettysburg, occurring four months after the climactic battle that had taken place there, had a twofold purpose. As stated in his now-famous "Gettysburg Address", it was, first, to dedicate a portion of the field of battle in honor of those who fought and died there for the cause of freedom. Secondly, it was to inspire "increased devotion" in Northerners to the cause of freedom still being waged in the ongoing war.

What ships were used during the Blockade Running era?

During the Blockade Running era, primarily in the context of the American Civil War, ships used for this purpose included fast, steam-powered vessels and sailing ships known for their speed and agility. Notable examples include the British-built blockade runners like the CSS Alabama and the CSS Florida, which were designed to evade Union naval forces. These ships often had shallow drafts to navigate coastal waters and were equipped to carry cargo such as arms, supplies, and luxury goods. The goal was to slip past Union blockades to supply the Confederacy effectively.

What was the purpose of the belin airlift?

The Berlin Airlift was initiated in response to the Soviet blockade of West Berlin in 1948, which aimed to cut off supplies to the city and force the Western Allies out of Berlin. The purpose of the airlift was to provide essential food, fuel, and supplies to the residents of West Berlin, demonstrating the West's commitment to defending the city against Soviet pressure. Over the course of nearly a year, Allied forces flew in millions of tons of supplies, ultimately leading to the lifting of the blockade in May 1949. The airlift symbolized the Cold War divide and the determination of the West to resist Soviet expansion.
