The Viet Cong (VC) were important to the communist North Vietnamese because THEY (the VC) were already in South Vietnam. The North Vietnamese Army had to travel down the Ho Chi Minh Trail to get to South Vietnam. Which was continously being "blasted" by the US Air Force & US Navy jet fighter bombers, B-52's, and AC-130 Spectre Gunships.
