World War I, known at the time as the "Great War', and "the War to End All Wars", had a multi-layered effect on the United States. Politically, the U.S. resumed an isolationist attitude towards the world, particularly to political affairs in Europe, and was unwilling to become involved in any external disputes or conflicts. The brutality of the war, and significant loss of life played a pivotal role in this perspective. Economically, the U.S. emerged as a premier superpower in the world. The war effort further accelerated the the industrialization of commerce, and GDP (gross domestic product) increased greatly. Socially, there occurred an influx of women into the workforce, as most of the men had been conscripted to serve during the period of U.S. involvement. The social and economic upheaval of half of the population, as well as an overall sense of loss of innocence, contributed to the period of the twenties of as one of the "Lost Generation" of poets, writers, and artists emerging from the war experience, as well at the "Roaring Twenties" of the suffragist movement, Prohibition and subsequent increase in bootlegging and organized crime.

World War I caused the demise of four monarchies. Two became multiple democracies and monarchies. One became a single democracy. The fourth became communist. The war devastated the economies of multiple countries and toppled the traditional social order in many countries.
