The answer to your question is a long an tedious one. Knowing that there were more than 600 ships by the end of the war, you will not get a list! But, I do have help for self research. The "Civil War Naval Chronology 1861-1865" is a good start. Some libraries have it for check out, others have it for reference only. Online at moa.cit.cornell.edu is another good reference, this site takes a little time to navigate, you will find a list of USS and CSS ships. The websites that come up on search engines don't even come close to the lists on these two references. Good Luck, Jim P.S. In the MOA click on browse, arrow down to official records of the navies, click on simple search-you want series II, vol. 1
Battleship was a term used later in navy technology development. During the Civil War, the ships used on the inland waterways were called "ironclads". Check out this link.
The 2 great battle ships that were used in the civil are USS monitor and CSS virgina.

The Union navy was mostly used to blockade principal southern ports
Blockade the Confederate Coast
When the Civil War brought up, the Union Navy had 92 warships of which: 21 of them were useless, many of the remnants were stationing in Japan or near the African Coasts, 26 steamships and 16 sailing ships could be put quickly in service, 10 steamships and 18 sailing ships were under repairing and in dry dock, 1, the Merrimack got immediately lost in Norfolk after this arsenal fell in Confederate's hand.
The USA has the biggest navy so it has most warships

Many warships were invented during the US Civil War. Coming immediately to mind are the Merrimack and the Monitor, both early armoured warships. Also the David and the Hunley, early submarines built for the Confederate Navy.
US Navy warships. During the US Civil War, the US was called: Federal forces; Union forces; Yankees; Yanks; Blue Coats; Northerners; etc.
During the US Civil War, the US had a much larger navy than the Confederacy. One advantage of this was that it was at a problem for the South when Northern warships blockaded Southern ports.
Based on the shortage of Union warships that were prepared to do battle, the Navy began a rapid program to commission warships. By the middle of July 1861, the US Navy had 82 warships fit for duty.
During the US Civil War, the Union navy had a number of responsibilities. This included blockading Southern seaports, transporting troops and supplies, bombarding Southern forts that guarded their seaports and protecting Union cargo ships from the Southern warships. They also engaged in battle directly with Souther warships.
The Confederate navy was small during the US Civil War. Despite that, Confederate warships hampered the Union's naval efforts by sinking a good number of Union cargo ships and warships too. Captain Raphael Semmes was a leading Confederate officer in the war. During his time with the Southern navy, the ships under his command sank or captured over eighty Union ships. His most successful warship was the CSS Alabama.
they served as hospital aids, wagon drivers, and hospital aids. some fought during the war for the union army or navy but most served in warships (as the examples in the first sentence)

Soviet ships stop and then turn back
During WWII and onward, normally large US Navy warships had a contingent of US Marines aboard, as part of the vessel's crew (Marines assigned to the warship). If any LARGE US Navy warships were in England, US Marines were probably present too.
