The primary advantage of the Confederacy was that this civil war was not the normal kind of civil war. In fact, this was so much the truth that the war had other names. One popular one was the War Between the States. With that said, the South's main advantage was that it did not need to gain power over the US government and defeat the Federal armies in order to begin its reign over the United States. The advantage was it needed to discourage the Federal government from its goal of suppressing the South's rebellion. The idea was sound enough. It's answered by this question; why should we ( the US ) lose the thousands of lives of our men and women in order to keep a group of states in our Union, when each side despises each other? Why not let them go? The question (s ) is not as foolish as it would sound today. In 1861, however, no one knew the future, or could predict what a bordering nation ( the Confederacy ) might have on the future?
It's clear that if people knew that 600,000 soldiers would die as a result of a war, somehow, somewhere, by any means possible, there must be another solution. The problem was, no one knew that. More than likely, with the knowledge of mass destruction on the horizon, a Lincoln like slave owner compensation plan would have been successful. Who can argue against that with a future seeing telescope?
The South were mostly working to defend their new country and could do so on their familiar grounds. The North would have to come onto their land to fight. They also had capable generals Albert Johnston, Joseph Johnston, and Robert Lee, who had resigned from the U.S. Army to fight for the Confederacy.
Some of the best officers of the US Army had resigned to join the Confederates.
Traditional advantage in cavalry - most young Southerners could ride and shoot
Officer class - the army was a more natural choice of career for sons of rural landowners than in the industrial North.
Rank-&-file - a more soldierlike breed, a generally aggressive kind of people
Home-ground advantage - most battles were on terrain unfamiliar to the enemy
Stronger war-mission - to defend the homeland against the invader.
Their President did not have to face an election in mid-war, as Lincoln did.
(At the beginning) Prospect of recognition and military aid from Britain and France.
Two advantages of the South in the US Civil War:
1. superior leadership
2. fighting to protect their home territory
Two advantages of the North in the US Civil War:
1. larger population
2. superior manufacturing and industrial resources
The defeat of the South was inevitable in prolonged war. The only way the North could be defeated was through the war weariness of the population.
The advantages of the South during the US Civil War failed to bring to the South its goal of independence. The main advantage of the South was that it needed to not conquer the North, but to be defensive, and cause the North to see that waging the war was too costly. By being in a defensive mode for most of the war, the South was able to need less troops in order to defend itself from Union offensives. Also, since the greater part of the war was fought in the South, the South had the advantage of knowing more about its territory then did the North. Southern troops were defending well known territory, while the North was attacking territory it knew less about.
The north had more advantages, the south had more allies.
South Yemen Civil War happened in 1986.
A civil war is when 2 factions fight to control the same government. The south wanted their own government so the American 'Civil War' was not a civil war. It was and is the south's view that the north invaded the south, starting a war of aggression.
No, most blacks did not leave the south after the civil war.
The Civil War (1861-1865) The Civil War was fought between the Union (north) and the Confederacy (south). The war was fought mainly about the issue of slavery. The Union eventually won and that is what makes us the United States of America today.
They had slaves.
