In England it was really difficult for them to get fresh fruit, some fresh vegetables, chocolate, sugar was scarce and other food goods that had been on the ships which the German U boats sunk. They had trouble getting potatoes so they resorted to depending on carrots and other root vegetables available on the island.
In the US people could get most foods but they could not get everything all the time as the Americans can today. The Americans grew victory gardens to supplement their diets. They did miss coca cola and chocolate because the manufacturers were sending the pop and chocolate bars/M&Ms to the servicemen and women overseas. Some women griped about having to use powdered milk because the milk rations were so low.
In Japan, the Japanese were scrounging around for rice and vegetables and fruit because a lot of gardens were being burned up by the napalm bombs. The rural farmers' crops were getting low because so many people from the cities were getting the crop foods from the farmers. They began overcharging for any crop produce and rice bags they had left. The Japanese leaders encouraged them to eat acorns, acorn byproducts and fish from the ocean.
In Germany the Germans had been able to get anything until the carpet bombing started. Soon the Germans realized they could not get enough food of any type even if it came from the nations they occupied. There was not enough food in those nations too.
During World War II, cities were often "blacked out" during air raids to make it difficult for airplane bombers to identify their targets. Bombing raids were often carried out after dark because it made the bombers more difficult to spot and, therefore, to be shot down.
