Having beheaded the King, Charles I, the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell ruled England for about 12 years, declining to have himself named king. He did try to pass the title on to his son when he died, but the son was not the man his father had been. This led to the "Restoration", when the son of the beheaded Charles I was restored to the throne as Charles II in 1660.
