Armor is such a natural idea that it's impossible to pinpoint one single source. The quality of the armor was a gradual development as blacksmiths evolved into specialists - armorers who then got better and better at what they've been doing.

The French were the first to invent a tank with armor. It was Jean Baptiste Estienne idea to add armor and artillery to a Holt tractor.
Metal armor (plate armor) was not invented in medieval age, it was already used by ancient greeks and romans. Metal armor allowed knights to be stronger.
No one can know, hunting and body armor each are a illdefined question when it comes to knowing it's oragins. Each group had a style to body armor.
