By the end of World War 2 there were few sovereign nations who were not involved in the war in some way.
Most everyone played a role in the war that could be construed as having some kind of major effect (even an officially neutral nation like Sweden, whose government allowed the passage of German troops through its territories, for example), which is why it was a truly global conflict. But the list of major players who were involved in major fighting goes something like this:
Axis CountriesThe following are sometimes also included: Iraq (Gailani government), Burma, Thailand, The Philippines (Laurel government), Republic of China at Nanking and Manchukuo.
Allied CountriesThe two factions were the Allies and the Axis.
Allied Powers
The US, UK, Soviet Union, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Ethiopia (vs Italy), China (vs Japan), Greece, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, the Philippines (vs Japan), Mexico, and Brazil. Also the Underground in the occupied countries of Poland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Norway.
Axis Powers
Germany, Japan, Italy (until 1943), Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Finland, Iraq, Manchkuo (Japanese occupied Manchuria), and Thailand (Japanese controlled). Also Vichy France (occupied France), which had practically no military forces after 1942.
The United State, Great Britain, Canada as well as Australia were among those considered the Allied Powers led under the Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower, or "Ike" as many called him.
The Axis powers were primarily composed of Germany, Italy, as well as Japan. VE day came on the 8th May 1945 shortly after Hitler committed suicide in his Berlin bunker.
VJ day, or Victory over Japan Day as the term has been applied, to both the day on which the initial announcement of Japan's surrender was made in the afternoon of August 15, 1945, in Japan, and because of time zone differences, to August 14, 1945, (when it was announced in the United States, Western Europe, the Americas, the Pacific Islands, and Australia/New Zealand), as well as to September 2, 1945, when the signing of the surrender document took place.
May want to double check, but I think that's failry accurate.
Thanks!
Chris
