Planes were origionally used in WW1 for recon. They quickly figured out that they could drop explosives from them. Then they had to use them against enemy aircraft. The use of planes made it quite evident that if you controlled the airspace over a battle, you controlled the battle. This holds true today although everyone plays an important part. Air, sea, ground. In World War 1 bi-planes and tri-planes were used for reconnaissance, bombing and as fighter planes.

In World War 2 there were numerous types of planes used. They were used for transportation, bombing, as fighters, medical transportation and to move cargo around.

In WW1, airplanes were used for reconnaissance, bombing, intercepting, and miscellaneous seaplane roles. In WW2, airplanes were used also for reconnaissance, bombing, and intercepting, but they were also used for torpedo bombing, dropping in airborne troops, transporting cargo, antisubmarine warfare, strafing, rocket attacks, as ground attack planes, dive bombers, fighter escorting, and in two world firsts: Jet power and dropping the atomic bombs.
