They fought in Gallipoli, Turkey; on the Western Front in France; the Light Horse Brigade went to Egypt and the Middle East; the Australian Flying Corps served in German New Guinea, Mesopotamia and India; the Australian Navy saw action in the Indian Ocean (they sank a German light cruiser off the Cocos Islands) and German New Guinea.
They didn't fight at all
I don't know how they felt emotionally, if that is what you're trying to find out. Fact is, however, that the Australians fought against the Turks during the battle of Gallipolli. So I don't think the Australians considered the Turks to be their 'mates'. The reason the Australians fought against the Turks, was probably the pressure put on them by Great Britain. I don't know how willing they were to actually fight the Turks though.
No, John Steinbeck didn't fight in World War II. He was a war correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune during World War II, though.

Australians, along with New Zealanders, mark the First World War with ANZAC Day. It is a day of remembrance, and Australians generally take great pride in their contributions to the war effort.

Australia fought in Egypt, Lybya, Crete and Papua New Guinea.
During World War I, many Australians volunteered to fight, inspired by a sense of duty and patriotism. Notable figures include Sir John Monash, who became a prominent commander, and ordinary soldiers like Private Albert Jacka, who received the Victoria Cross for bravery. The enthusiasm for enlistment was fueled by national pride and the belief in supporting the British Empire. By the war's end, over 400,000 Australians had enlisted, reflecting a significant commitment to the war effort.
