Midway, June 4, 1942. There were four great carrier battles in 1942 but Midway was the most clear-cut US victory. There was not another major carrier battle until June 1944, which was another US lopsided victory, often called the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot". This latter battle basically finished Japanese naval air power, though the US did not realize it. The Japanese still had a few carriers but all their experienced pilots were dead.
the strategic plan for the battle of midway was just to hold the fort and continue fighting. however, long before the Japanese got there, US inteligence picked up a transmission from the Japanese. it clearly stated what the strike would be. US leaders sent out 3 heavy aircraft carriers to duke it out with the Japs 3 reg. aircraft carriers.
The Battle of Midway changed the course of the war in the Pacific because the United States started attacking the Imperial Japanese Navy offensively rather than defensively. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Americans understood the superiority of aircraft carriers. By the end of the Battle of Midway, the Americans mastered the art of the aircraft carrier. In total, 4 Japanese aircraft carriers were sunk during this battle, Soryuu, Hiryuu, Akagi, and Kaga. The aircraft carrier sailed through the Pacific Campaign with glorious victories. It was what made large battleships obsolete, and its superiority is why the Untied States operates 11 aircraft carriers today, with a 12th one being built, more carriers than the entire world combined.
