pearl harbor Pearl Harbor was not an amphibious attack. Possibly the invasion of French North Africa (Operation Torch) in 1942 was the largest before Normandy, or the invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky) in 1943.
One must first need to know what nation one isreferring to. If you mean the United States or Japan or even Germany and whether or not one is referring to landings from oceans, lakes or rivers, these are the things one needs to narrow the question. Japan could be considered the first with their invasion of China in the 30's. If you are referring to the United States it would be the landings in Guadalcanal in the middle of 1942. Japan was the initiator of amphibious landings with the opening assaults of December of 1941 with their landings in Indochina and the Philippines. Germany used amphibious assaults in 1941 in their invasion of the Soviet Union. The United States first used amphibious assaults on the north west African coast on November 8, 1942.
Either Iwo Jima or Okinawa, most likely Iwo. There were six divisions of Marines by that point in the war. Three of them went ashore on Iwo and a month and a half later the other three went in to Okinawa. One regiment of Marines was a "floating reserve', remaining aboard ship for a while at Okinawa, though.
Iwo Jima was an all-marine operation. Okinawa involved the three Marine divisions there plus even more Army divisions. Okinawa was the only place outside the Philippines where an entire US field army was deployed - the US 10th Army, which included the Marines in an Amphibious Corps.
Many things were significant - It was and still is the largest amphibious and parachute invasion ever. It was the largest seaborne landing of armoured vehicles ever It was the first time a landing force prevailed against a much larger entrenched force. It was the largest gathering of naval firepower ever It was the first time amphibious armour was used in war. There were more airborne attack sorties that one day than ever before( and possibly since)
It is called an amphibious assult.
d-day, during WWII
I believed the british and canadians stormed the Normandy beaches at Gold, Sword and Juno..........................
June the 6th, 1944.
Yes! The Allied Forces invaded the coast of Normandy, France. This was the largest amphibious attack ever launched. The attack was on June 6, 1944. When the Allied Forces reached Germany, the end of the war came. The war ended May 7, 1945.
For most people, it is synonymous terms. However D-Day was used to designate an attack for any battle or amphibious landing.

Amphibious? Germans were using u boats to attack defenseless ships.
June 6, 1944, supported by 6,000 aircraft and 6,000 naval vessels, 175,000 American, Canadian, and British troops landed in Normandy. Known as Operation Overlord, it was one of the greatest amphibious attack in military history.

Operation Overlord: 5 beaches in Normandy (Parachute landings by US & British Airborne) jn Normandy Code names Gold Juno Sword Omaha & Utah Operation Dragoon (Also known as Anvil) Landings in Southern France on the Mediterranean coast.
Amphibious, I guess. An attack from the sea was referred to as an amphibious assault.
It is called an amphibious assult.

D-Day June 6, 1944 of course! How do you not know that? The boats carrying thousands of American, Canadian, and British troops stormed the 5 Normandy Beaches off the North-West coast of France. Disregard the above answer. It is completely wrong. Operation Barbarossa, the German attack on the USSR was the biggest attack in history. 2nd was Operation Zitadelle. 3rd was Operation Bagration. 4th was the Soviet attack on Manchuria. 5th was the US attack on Okinawa, then Operation Overlord.
