Brazil has never been a formal member of the movement, but shares many of the aims of NAM and frequently sends observers to the Non-Aligned Movement's summits.
Nonalignment, that is, not allied to either side in the Cold War. India, which blended a democratic government with a socialist economy, was a leader in the nonaligned movement.
The Ashoka Chakra on the flag of India is a depiction of a 24-spoked Dharmachakra (Wheel of Dharma, or Wheel of Life) -- originally a Buddhist symbol but now standing for all the religions of India.It replaced the charkha (specifically, a spinning-wheel, and a symbol of the Indian independence movement) which had featured on pre-independence versions of the flag.
Using civil disobedience would make the British send in soldiers and that would often lead to violence giving the independence supporters a reason to fight the British. Except in India's case where it just made the Brits look like mindless butchers, making the world support India in their push for independence.
