The members of the colonial militias came from all classes of society. The first colonial militia was formed in 1636, 140 years before the American Revolution. The Massachusetts General Court, the colonials' governing body in that colony, required that all able-bodied men between the ages of 16 and 60 join the militia. (There were exceptions for ministers, judges, some master craftsmen and ship masters, etc. so in practice the militia had a higher proportion of the working class than the population in general.) Members of the militia were required to meet to train regularly and be ready to fight when needed. The purpose of the militia was to protect the colonies against attack from Native Americans, to be ready to fight foreign invasion, and to keep order in the towns and villages.
The "Redcoats" were the soldiers of the regular British Army, who wore fancy bright red uniforms.

British troops faced several disadvantages when fighting colonial militias, including unfamiliarity with the terrain, which often favored the irregular tactics of the colonists. The British military was accustomed to traditional warfare and linear formations, making them vulnerable to guerrilla tactics employed by the colonists. Additionally, logistical challenges and long supply lines hindered their operations, while the colonists benefited from local support and motivation to defend their homes and liberties. Ultimately, these factors contributed to the difficulties the British faced in effectively combating the colonial militias.
Colonial Militias posed a problem for the British as they did not fight with the same uniform tactics as armies in Europe did.

Prior to the Revolutionary War, militias were used in all of the colonies, especially during the French and Indian War. During this time, there was some conflict between the British Army, headed by George Washington and the militias who were reluctant to involve themselves in the skirmishes as ordered.

The main role of the Colonial Militia was to be the front line of the smaller battles against Britain. The Colonial Militia would also take parts protecting waterways and key roads.
Members of local militias are often referred to as "militia members," "militiamen," or simply "militia." In some contexts, they may also be called "volunteers" or "citizen soldiers," depending on their organization and purpose. The terminology can vary based on the region and the specific mission of the militia.
