The US bore the brunt of the fighting in World War II, leading the Allied forces that included British, French, Australian, Canadian, Indian, Polish, and other troops. On the other hand, most of the losses of the war were incurred by the Soviets, who drastically weakened Germany, and by the Chinese, who had been subjugated by the Japanese beginning in 1937.
However, by dint of its manufacturing base, manpower, and Natural Resources, and having to fight successfully in both major theaters, the US was the obvious key to victory in the war. Left to their own devices, Europe would likely have become a divided German/Russian state and most of Asia a Japanese territory.
