D-Day was June 6, 1944, and it was the beginning of a battle in World War II. D-Day is the day that the United States and Britain landed troops in France to retake France from Nazi Germany. During that war the forces opposing Nazi Germany were called the Allies, and included Britain, the U.S.S.R., and the United States. A number of military units from other countries fought as well, such as Canada and Australia, a and number of soldiers from countries which had been taken over by Germany had found refuge in Britain, and they also took part in the conflict. The Allies won the war in May of 1945.
