Alexei Maresyev

Alexei Maresyev, a combat pilot who flew without feet became a people's hero in his country. Maresyev's Yak 1 had been damaged in a dogfight and the pilot was forced to crash-land deep in the enemy rear in Kalinin (Tver) Region, Bleeding from several wounds, it took him 18 days of creeping through forests to reach safety He was found by village children and sent by plane to a hospital in Moscow, where his legs were amputated.

Although this seemed to mark the end of his flying career, Maresyev refused to give up. He returned to the air force on artificial limbs and learned to fly again. Soon he was in a fighter plane, and subsequently downed seven enemy planes. He died minutes before celebrating his 85th Birthday. Although the Birthday celebration was scheduled two days early before the actual day.

Does the 'Great patriotic war' you read about in Russian literature also refer to World War 1?

The Great Patriotic War was the term that Stalin popularized for the Russian involvement in World War Two, in an effort to rally the Russian populance around his leadership (i.e. to fight for the survival of Mother Russia from the Evil Nazis). It does not have anything to do with WW1 or the Russian Civil War.
