The first plane in Europe to actually fly was the (l4 Bis) designed, built and flown by the Brazilian engineer Alberto Santos-Dumont, no relation to the television manufacturer -Dumont. Senor Dumont was also credited with the wrist watch as this was practical in flying compared to the pocket type. One model had an inertia switch that would stop the movement in event of a violent impact- such as a crash and this could help pinpoint the time- if not cause of the mishap! Dumont held a number of patents, he was also a dirigible pilot. He died in l932.

EDIT;; Actually, the second airplane was created in a Town called Farnborough, in Hampshire, by a man called Samuel Cody and Cernal Capper.
