People writing to American soldiers overseas, and the soldiers writing back.

You needed a special type of stationery, which civilians had to buy. It was for sale everywhere.

In the top middle of the page was a space for the address. You wrote your letter below, then mailed it off. Every overseas soldier had an APO (Army Post Office) number for his unit, and sailors had an FPO (Fleet Post Office). So you sent it an APO or FPO, care of the Postmaster, New York, it was going to Europe, or Postmaster, San Francisco if your letter was headed for the Pacific.

At the mail facility there they would open your letter written on the special form and microfilm it, and destroy the original. Hundreds of letters could be put on a single microfiche, smaller than a single sheet of note paper. Then the microfiche were sent overseas, saving tons of cargo and scarce, crucial space on ships. On the far side the letters were blown back up and printed, and put in small envelopes, folded so the address at the top of the first page of your letter showed through a little glassine window in the front middle of the envelope. Then the letter was forwarded on to the APO for the addressee's unit, to be delivered.

Mail back to the states was also sometimes microfilmed this way, but sometimes just sent on in its original envelope. Shipping space was not so crucial on the trip back to the US. Servicemen did not have to pay postage.
