it is my understanding that the first general to lead u.s. forces in Africa was a two star named Lloyd fredentall who was romped by rommel at kasserine pass Tunisia. he was replaced as 2nd corps commander by gen. geoerge s. Patton who was recently promoted to a three star after landing in morrocco in'43 as part of operation torch. with his deputy commander gen. Omar bradley together routed the Germans in the battle of el guettar. ultra (eave's dropping system) provided excellent Intel and the Americans had the element of surprise on their side plus newly arrived heavy artillery armaments in their arsenal proved devastating. Patton was appointed commander of the 7th army and bradley took over command ot the second corps. after cleaning up North Africa with the british, free french, free poles and other allied forces it was on to Sicily to attack Italy "the soft underbelly' of the axis forces. some folks state that their was two fronts in the European theatre during the second world war but in fact their were numerous fronts, from ground forces to counter-intelligence,resistance movements to the air!
