A soldier of Sumters garrison, Private Daniel Hough, was killed. As the defenders were firing a 100 gun salute while lowering the US flag a cannon burst causing his death. This was after the fort had surrendered and not due to hostile action. Private Hough is sometimes pointed to as the first man to die in the War between the States.
