Who were civil war rebels?

The Northern states who did not secede considered the Southern states a "rebelling" and so called them rebels. The Southerners did not see themselves a rebels, but as soldiers of a sovereign nation.

These people were from the South-Southeast continental United States, and fought against the Northern states called the Union. The rebel's goal was to become an independent nation away from the Union. The war ended with the Confederate surrender, and the rebelling states were readmitted into the Union, with penalties.
