Mostly British with a large contingent of Australians landed on Gallipoli, near the Dardanelle Straits occupied by the Ottoman Turks in 1915 during World War I.
The idea was to cut off the Black Sea but ended in failure.
General Sir Ian Hamilton (British leader) led the allied forces during the landing and the majority of the campaign. He was fighting against Lt. General Otto Limanvon sanders (the Turkish leader) and Mustafa Kemal (the German leader). Near the end of the campaign, Hamilton was replaced with Admiral Sir John De Robeck who led the allied soldiers out of Gallipoli. The retreat resulted in no casualties and Hamilton was later stripped of his ranks.
