Britain declared war on Germany in response to Germany's invasion of Belgium. Belgium had been regarded as a neutral state under international law since 1839. On August 1st, Britain asked the ambassadors of both France and Germany if they intended to honor Belgian neutrality in the event of war between themselves. The French stated immediately that it was their intention to do so. Ominously, the German ambassador declined to give a similar commitment.
