It is truly said that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it and the Holocaust is something that must never be allowed to happen again. There are people in this world who believe that the holocaust never actually happened. Oh, a few Jews were probably killed, the rest simply left Germany. The gypsies were also persecuted and even some Catholics, all in all, it was not a big deal. These people must be confronted. They must not be allowed to spew their lies and hatred unchallanged, a hatred that is taught from generation to generation. Recording the stories of the holocaust survivors is but one way of countering the lies of those who would deny history. The above answer is concerned with the issue of Holocaust denial, not with the question, which is primarily about the personal (psychological) need of survivors to talk about their experiences. (It asks about the importance of 'telling', not recording). It's part of the attempt to come to terms with their sufferings.

Answer I feel it's important for survivors to record their stories, for two main reasons; 1. By talking about it, they will find that they will get an inner peace. Their talking about it will act as a kind of 'catharsis', and help them at least in part. 2. Again by recording their stories, it may, make people think, and understand that Evil will only win, IF good men/women remain silent. Look around you right now! Nothing has changed for Evil men are still out there and are still killing men, women and children, but not in the massive numbers. Record every experience, and by talking about it all, those who died and have no voice, will not be forgotten, even if their names are not known to us.
