It started, officially, with the assassination of a little-known Austrian Arch-Duke, and it was essentially a war that nobody wanted, but had to happen because everybody had some kind of protection treaty with everyone else in Europe at that time. As far as England and Germany specifically are concerned, it becomes even more peculiar when you understand that the British Royal Family are actually direct descendents of the German Royal Family, and it was not until the first war that the British royals thought it might be a good idea to change their name from the German Hapsburgs to the very English Windsors.
