In 1937, Japan invaded China, like it had done several times during its history. The two were ancient enemies. The United States attempted to force Japan to leave China by slapping Japan with a crippling Oil Embargo. No one was allowed to sell Oil to Japan. No oil means no Navy, no Army, and no Airforce. Which means Japan would lose in China. Japan needed its own oil supply, and the only place to get it at the time was in the Dutch East Indies (present day Philippines area). The only thing in the way was the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbour. So they attacked it. The rest I assume you know.

The embargo on oil was only the beginning, when Japan refused to cease their imperialistic actions they were also slapped with an embargo on iron, rubber, and other resources. Which caused them to go further with their actions, especially with resource rich China.

Why? To prove that they were loyal Americans. The US Government rounded up Japanese-Americans and interned them for security reasons. There was some evidence that spies were involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor. So many did not trust them. And I'm sure many were threatened by other Americans who didn't were ignorant to think that ALL Americans of Japanese descent were involved in the Pearl Harbor attack. When offered to join the US Army, they took the opportunity to do so. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team trained at Camp Shelby, MS in 1942, where it absorbed the 100th Battalion, with became the 1st Battalion of 3 battalions. The 442nd Combat Team went in combat in Italy. Only the 100th Battalion entered combat with the 34th Infantry Division on 27 September, 1943. Soon after the fall of Rome on 4 June, 1944, all the units of the 442nd Combat Team were together. They continued to fight in Italy and then were moved to Southern France. The 442nd Combat Team, less the 522 Field Artillery Battalion, returned to Italy in April 1945, where they were attached to the 92nd Division until the end of the war in Italy. The 92nd Infantry Division was an all-black unit. Late in the war it was reinforced with the 473 Regimental Combat Team, a white unit and the 442 RCT, a Japanese-American unit. This made the 92nd Infantry Division a truly inter-racial unit---quite unique in the history of the US Army.
