The attack, "John Brown's Raid" was two years before the Civil War began, and Brown was tried, convicted and hanged within a few months after his failed raid. Brown attacked a US government arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (it is now in West Virginia). An arsenal is where military weapons are made and stored. Brown wanted to seize the weapons at Harper's Ferry and use them to arm slaves from the surrounding countryside. He expected the slaves would hear of his attack and run away to the arsenal to take part in a slave revolt. This was the deepest fear of southern slave-owners - that their slaves would rebel, rise against them in "servile insurrection", and that they would all be massacred in their beds. So retributory justice was swiftly meted out to Brown, by the court and the hangman.
