There were limited ceasefires, burial details, and even some gift exchanges between the hostile forces.
Although then-Pope Benedict XV's call for a truce was rejected, troops on the Western front observed similar limited ceasefires for Christmas, 1915, and on the Eastern front for Easter in 1916.
