they believed it would give them honor and they hadn't heard of the war and its lifestyle before. Most of the soldiers were farmers looking for something else to do then farm for the rest of their lives.

The Confederates had a highly emotive war-mission - to defend the homeland against the invader. Also many of them were the sort of young men who simply enjoyed a darn good fight.

For the North, it was mainly commercial - saving the vast cotton revenues. But saving the Union was pretty emotive too, at least in the first half, till war-weariness set in.
