It is basic economics: if slavery is outlawed, they lose their property (slaves) and their ability to make a living (growing crops). They also have to compete for jobs and goods with the freed slaves, and deal with the consequences of an impoverished lower class.
Of course, they could have just paid their ex-slaves a lower wage, which is what happened after Reconstruction.

One of the Civil War's causes is the fact that there are many sides that both wanted the country to develop by its design (Eg: the Northerners wanted the central bank to exist while the Southerners opposed it ). And about slavery, the Southerners wanted many slave states to increase the slave number so that their kind of economic which based much on labor force will be promoted while the Northers just wanted to develop the middle class to trade together so therfore rising their industrialized economic.
