The Cold War was years in the making, with both sides harboring resentment. The Soviet Union felt that the United States had abandoned them in WWII, and the US feared communism. Little jiibes went back in forth for years, with the resentment growing on both sides. Finally they came to a standstill on both sides when the Soviet Union started to deliver weapons to Cuba and position them facing the US (this is during Kennedy's presidency), the US told Cuba and the Soviet Union to remove the weapons but they did not. Finally the US set up a blockade around Cuba keeping Soviet ships from entering at any cost. Finally Nikita Krushchev called off his ships and the US and Soviet Union came to an agreement - if the US would remove the nuclear weapons they had in Turkey, the Soviet Union would remove the weapons they had in Cuba.

So basically the Cold War lasted so long because both sides just continued to let the resentment build instead of trying to solve the problems that finally ended up causing the Cold War. However, following the Cold War Kruschev and Kennedy saw how close they were to a nuclear blowout and decided to create a 'hotline' between both sides - the US hotline is located in the Pentagon and the Soviet hotline is located in the Kremlin; both are still used to this day for immediate contact between the Soviet and US rulers.

First of all, previous answerer, I don't think you understand the definition of finally. It means that's the final point. Don't say finally if you're not done explaining and don't write it 3 times in a row. Second of all, does that mean there was no fighting, just threats of fighting?
